American (English) remake of the French series HPI (2021)
Story
The series follows Morgan, a single mother of three children, who, thanks to her exceptional mind, is able to help solve a crime when she rearranges evidence during her shift as a cleaner at the police department.. Despite her very high IQ, excellent memory, and extensive knowledge of the arcane, Morgan makes a series of basic mistakes in the law that no one has ever made. Watch a TV law show that says don’t do it.
Admissible in a court of law
In the first episode, for example, she retrieves a document from a locked safe in the suspect’s – victim’s – law office – evidence that was illegally obtained – which could never be admissible in court. It also could not be used to obtain other evidence – violating the legal principle of "fruit of the poisonous tree". In episode #2, she has to be reminded to wear gloves before handling evidence at a crime scene, and in #3, she removes all documented evidence from the police station, completely breaking the chain of custody and further destroying everything she removed.
As most shows start, it’s a bit of a letdown
HPI Remake (2021). First of all, it’s not a clone of "Bones" or other cop shows that deal with people with marketable abilities when they come to the police force. The girl is good, obviously the acting mania can’t keep up like it did in the first episode.
The cops aren’t going to use a straitjacket
Unlike the lab tech demos and other shows where they’re just "off their meds". Second, the actor who plays Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) is powerful, he’s a real cop in "Manifest" When shows like this are smooth and character-driven, they tend to be better, and the flow starts to work. In the case of the talented Morgan, it’s hard to believe that someone with her abilities hasn’t been snapped up by a tech company or a financial firm, but I think there are people who, despite their talent, couldn’t make it in the regular world.
