My son was 7 when Paddington 2 came out and it's one of my all time favourite films so waiting 7 years for the 3rd instalment brought with it a hope that Paddington in Peru could be as good as the first 2 films. Its not.
The jokes we got from the staple characters like Mrs Bird virtually non existent.Sally Hawkins brought such a charming quirkiness to the Mary Brown character that whatever the franchise says- she really was irreplaceable. It would have served the series legacy better to simply have had Mary Brown absent from this adventure, or give up.The genius slapstick of the second film is largely gone or its re-creation is repeated but just not as well.
Banderas character and Gina do not work either though dont believe that's down to either of the actors. I was relieved to see in the credits "and Phoenix Buchanan as Phoenix Buchanan." Bring back Sally Hawkins for Paddington 4 too, and then end the series.
